The Estonian transmission system operator “Elering” informed that, according to the plan, both the repair works and the restoration of underwater and coastal connections on both sides have been completed.
The damage site of “Balticconnector” was located at a depth of about 60 meters on the seabed. All repairs were carried out by remote control equipment, divers were not involved. More than a dozen different organizations and companies were involved. Usually, the repair of such underwater infrastructure takes one to two years, “Balticconnector” the repair was carried out in about seven months. The cooperation with the partners has been extremely effective,” said Titus Tomits, the maintenance manager of the “Elering” offshore gas pipeline.
The pipeline will be filled with gas after all repair and preparatory work is completed.
On Monday, April 22, the use of the gas pipeline for the transmission of gas intended for the market will resume.
It has already been reported that the “Balticconnector” gas pipeline connecting Estonia and Finland was damaged on October 8. At the same time, communication cables between Estonia and Finland and Estonia and Sweden were also damaged.
Finland’s Central Criminal Police announced in October that a six-ton anchor had been lifted from the seabed, which apparently damaged the “Balticconnector”. The anchor belongs to the Hong Kong-registered vessel Newnew Polar Bear, which was passing through the damage site when the damage occurred.
“Balticconnector” was put into operation at the beginning of 2020. The length of the underwater part of the gas pipeline from Paldiskie in Estonia to Inko in Finland is 77 kilometers.
