Due to the Champions League reform implemented next season, some fundamental things will change in the premier class from 2024/25. The usual group phase in its current form is no longer there; instead, there is an overall table of all participants who compete against eight different opponents without a return leg. In addition, instead of the current 32 teams, 36 teams will now take part in the tournament. This is where things are already getting interesting for the Bundesliga clubs: the two best nations in the UEFA annual ranking will each receive one of the additional starting places.

Even sixth starting place in the Champions League is possible for the Bundesliga
Serie A leads the ranking by some distance. The focus is on the race for the coveted second place. The Bundesliga has to be ahead of the game against the English Premier League. After this European Cup week with Aston Villa in the Conference League, the latter only has one candidate left in the race: Manchester City (against Real Madrid) and Arsenal FC (against FC Bayern) were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Liverpool FC (against Atalanta Bergamo) and West Ham United (against Bayer Leverkusen) failed in the Europa League. This means that Bayern and Dortmund are only missing a win and a draw or three draws in the “premier class” and the Werkself in the Europa League to be on the safe side. UEFA confirmed this when asked by Sportbuzzer. The lead is already comfortable.

In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the place would go to England based on the previous year’s results. By the way: If the Bundesliga prevails against England in the rankings, if BVB wins the Champions League trophy for the first time since 1997 and finishes a maximum of fifth in the championship, a sixth club in the German elite class would even qualify for the premier class.

This is how the ranking works: All clubs earn points for their country through their performance in European competitions. For example, a win in the current knockout phases gives you two points, while a draw still gives you one point. A point is also earned by reaching the next round (in the Conference League only from the semi-finals onwards). All points earned are then divided by the number of clubs that competed internationally for the respective country at the start of the season. In Germany’s case by seven, in England’s case by eight.
