Although he really entered and established himself in the starting line-up of “Leeds” after the New Year, the national Iliya Gruev was one of the footballers who got into the ranking for the player of the season 2023/2024 in the Yorkshire team.
The club’s annual awards were presented at a ceremony on Thursday evening.
Nearly 1,500 “Leeds” fans voted in the vote for the best player during the past campaign.
The 23-year-old Gruev received 42 votes, taking the 6th position.
Welshman Ethan Ampadu won the prize with 461 votes. Second was his compatriot Joe Roden (358). The two form the central pair of defenders after the New Year. Third is Dutch winger Crisencio Somerville (324). English youngster Archie Gray, who turned 18 on March 12, took 4th place with 201 votes. In front of Gruev is the French offensive footballer Jorginho Rüter (95).
The Bulgarian has become a main support midfielder in the scheme of German manager Daniel Farke. During the season, he made 26 appearances in the Championship (II level of football in England), starting 17 matches.
Somerville and Gray previously received other awards. The former was named player of the campaign in the Championship and the latter became the best young player.
On Monday, “Leeds” visit “Middlesbrough” in a match of the 44th round. Gruev and company take 3rd place in the ranking.
