Rabat-Salé-Kénitra: More than 87,000 Civil Protection interventions in 2023

In terms of assistance to people, some 86,398 interventions were carried out at the regional level, distributed between the prefectures and provinces of Rabat (18,791), Salé (12,479), Skhirate-Témara (19,378), Kénitra (16,783), Khemisset (7,358), Sidi Slimane (5,170) and Sidi Kacem (6,439).

With regard to the fight against fires, in particular forest fires, apartment fires, industrial unit fires and straw fires, Civil Protection elements carried out 2,882 interventions in the region over the past year, including 816 in the province of Kénitra, followed by the prefectures of Skhirate-Témara (534) and Rabat (391).

Regarding the drowning toll, a total of 431 interventions were carried out by the Regional Civil Protection Command which made it possible to save 4,617 individuals, including 1,692 at the Great Swimming Pool in Rabat.

To best manage risk coverage, the Regional Command has 40 units distributed among the seven prefectural commands, twenty secondary emergency centers and thirteen first aid stations, with 86 ambulances available. For this, it has a workforce of 1,091 elements.

The celebration of World Civil Protection Day (March 1), placed this year under the theme “Innovative technologies at the service of civil protection”, is part of the “Open Doors” organized by the Directorate General of Civil Protection within the Kingdom’s Civil Protection units, with the aim of promoting relief and rescue intervention initiatives and introducing the general public to civic responsibility.

The celebration at the level of the Rabat-Salé-kénitra Regional Command, in the presence of the wali of the region, governor of the prefecture of Rabat, Mohamed Yacoubi, was marked by the projection of an information capsule to instill culture of risk and the simulation of an intervention by Civil Protection elements to save the life of an individual suffering from illness, trapped inside a burning apartment located on the second floor. It had a significant presence of students who learned about the different equipment, mechanisms, means and techniques used in rescue and relief operations.

Speaking during this ceremony, Colonel Naha Adil, Prefectural Commander of Civil Protection in Rabat, underlined that scientific research in the technological field makes innovative solutions available to Civil Protection actors for a better response in emergency situation.

To best accomplish the humanitarian missions incumbent upon them, he specified, the Civil Protection services use cutting-edge technologies for risk detection, in this case satellite communication terminals integrated into “ Command Post vehicles” which offer responders connectivity in isolated areas not covered by terrestrial networks, drones used for research purposes on inaccessible sites during forest fires or collapses, multibeam detection sonar for location of bodies underwater, and many other means equipped with new generation software such as the geographic information system (GIS).

He also highlighted the commendable services rendered to society by Civil Protection, particularly during crises and major disasters which cause significant human and material damage, recalling the Al Haouz earthquake which saw the mobilization, alongside the other bodies and stakeholders, elements of Civil Protection to provide relief, support and assistance to disaster victims.

Faced with climate change, cold and heat waves and the resulting disasters, the development of the Civil Protection system becomes an imperative necessity and an extreme priority in view of the impact of its interventions on safety and security. the security of citizens, he noted, noting the imperative to introduce new innovative techniques in risk and disaster management in response to the recommendations of the International Civil Protection Organization, while ensuring the federation efforts of all stakeholders and the strengthening of partnerships between the public and private sectors for optimal disaster management.
