Las heat waves They are natural phenomena that occur annually, but recently they have occurred with more extreme temperatures as a result of climate change and anthropogenic activity – which humanity carries out and through which it modifies its environment -, said the specialists of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Diana Escobedo Urías y Sakthi Selva Lakshmi Jeyakumar.
This year it is estimated that several heat waves will be recorded between April y November, due to the displacement of the beginning of the warm season. In some entities, the temperature will reach 45 degrees, they explained.
The researcher of Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies on Environment and Development (Ciemad), Sakthi Selva Lakshmi Jeyakumar, recommended that to avoid adverse health effects such as dehydration, heat stroke, headache, exhaustion and overload of the cardiovascular system, the population should stay hydrated, wear light and light-colored clothing, apply sunscreen even in closed spaces, avoid exposing yourself during the hours of greatest solar radiation and keep homes, offices and businesses well ventilated.

He highlighted that the consequences of heat waves are reflected in health, the environment – drought and forest fires -, agriculture and the economy; It also recommended keeping pets well hydrated and not exposing them to high temperatures.
For her part, the specialist of Interdisciplinary Research Center for Comprehensive Regional Development (strong) Sinaloa UnitDiana Escobedo Urías explained that these events are the product of an atmospheric situation that produces extremely high temperatures in relation to the average of the time and that last more than a day.
“They are formed by the invasion of very warm air masses or by the prolonged permanence of one of these masses in a certain area,” he said.
He stated that the effects of heat waves differ in each entity of the national territory due to particular characteristics; exemplified that, in the Mexico CityIn addition to the heat wave, the temperature also rises due to the greenhouse effect inherent to its location in a basin, and due to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere from various sources.
He indicated that, in other states, such as Sinaloa, evidence of climate change is droughts, as well as changes in the rainfall pattern, which alters the agricultural cycle and has a direct impact on crop production.

The scientists explained that climate change is a problem with various aspects, whose attention requires the generation of strategies with the participation of the public and private sectors, the population and Higher Education institutions.
In this context, they highlighted that the IPN, through the Environment Networkfor 15 years it has promoted interdisciplinary research in which experts from different academic units and research centers participate, who unite their human capacities and infrastructure towards the search for solutions that impact the mitigation of climate change.
