D. Mitov is known for his pro-Western and pro-Ukrainian position, while R. Radev is against providing aid to Ukraine.
This was reported on Friday by “Radio Liberty”, which is based on “Ukrinform”.
D. Mitov from the center-right party GERB was supposed to replace Stefan Dimitrov as interim foreign minister at the request of the head of the interim government, Dimitar Glavchev.
However, R. Radevs, who has the final say in approving the members of the interim government, did not support his candidacy.
Former Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov previously expressed fears that Dimitrov could represent pro-Russian interests in government, adding that such Bulgarian policies could bring Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán out of the isolation he has found himself in over his stance on Ukraine.
D. Mitov himself told journalists that he refused to accept the offer to temporarily hold the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, citing the fact that he does not want to become a pawn in the current struggle for power, “Novinite” reports.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, Bulgaria’s interim government began work on April 9, after the dismissal of N. Denkov’s previous cabinet. He resigned on March 5.
March 28 the party “There is a nation” refused to form the government and returned the mandate to President R. Radev.
Later, R. Radev announced early general elections on June 9.
