“Evacuated residents cannot return yet, they are waiting for the special transport of radioactive materials to arrive and the materials will be removed,” said Odeta Vaitkevičienė, representative of the Kaunas County Chief Police Commissariat, on Friday evening.

As the on-duty specialist of the Kaunas Fire Rescue Board told Eltai, a report was received about the increased radiation background at the address on V. Landsbergio-Žemkalnis street.

“We know that something has been found that emits radiation. Currently, the entire operation has been taken over by Aras. “Several apartments closest to the fire have been evacuated,” said the representative.

We remind you that the officials in this area worked on the basis of the previous materials received and thus identified a possible increase.

An official of the Kaunas Fire Rescue Board informed that the officers may have found materials that can be used to make explosives, so the area was fenced off and residents were evacuated.

“At the moment, the territory is fenced off, residents are not allowed in the stairwell, so that the officers can do their work efficiently,” said the official.

Specialists of the Radiation Protection Center constantly (24/7) monitor the measurement data provided by the Radiation Early Warning Network (RADIS) and would immediately inform the responsible institutions and residents of Lithuania about the increase in the environmental radiation background and provide recommendations on the application of protective measures.
