Everything has it’s price. Also freeing the legs from the skinny jeans. At first glance – and that was a few years ago – this liberation movement didn’t have much of a price, apart from the simultaneous shift of the waistband towards the hips. Finally stop pretending that the two pillars that carry you through life don’t have to fit into enough material! The bit of squeezing was just part of it, uncomfortable to no end, but that’s just how it was, the others wore it too.
No, that’s long overdue. Generation Z has brought the wide trousers out of the noughties’ grab-bag – and with them legroom. Made of denim, linen, cotton, baggy, flared, flared, anything goes. What’s more, in bright, bold colors that you would have thought about eight times in the form of a pair of skinny jeans, that one dent might show up and you end up being the only person in the entire world with dents on your leg.
Spiral hair ties do not help reliably
The wide trousers don’t care about valleys like hills, nothing, simply nothing, touches them. Except the bicycle chain. And that is the price. Wide trousers and cycling – these two freedoms of movement annoy each other and yet stick to each other like skinny jeans once stuck to sweaty skin. Now that spring is once again a long way off, the bell-bottoms might be too airy for the cold in urban fresh air corridors. But if you don’t want to have to choose between local or car traffic in German cities, you can ride a bike.
And as little as the wide trousers touch the calves and ankles, they hug the drive mechanism of the bike, which, despite the protective device, vigorously dirty everything that flutters near it. Driving bow-legged helps, but it doesn’t guarantee anything and has little to do with freedom of movement. Spiral hair ties around the calf and fabric help, but are not reliable. All fabric containment measures slip, even reflective tape. Fashionable elegance is being compromised anyway.
In the end there is dirt. And the morning decision to wear tighter pants. Perhaps we have to humbly accept this limitation. Or make dirty pants socially acceptable. Unthinkable? It was also the downfall of skinny jeans.
