The UEB Gráfica Habana began printing provincial newspapers on Monday with modern technology that will reduce expenses, according to the state newspaper Granma.
With the launch of this entity, belonging to the Newspaper Company and known as the Havana Polygraphic, improvements will be experienced in “distribution times, circulation and a significant reduction in high expenses in fuel for transportation.” , which now decrease by 54%,” the note reported.
Until this moment, the production of provincial and national newspapers that were distributed from Camagüey to Pinar del Río, including the Isla de la Juventud, were printed in Santa Clara.
According to the text, the technological reconversion project that was carried out in the company could be carried out thanks to the “credit granted” after the visit of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel to China last year.
After its completion, in addition to the press, other graphic materials will be produced, among which those for education on the island stand out.
Regarding the latter, Laura Pupo Almaguer, director of the Newspaper Company, stated that this production is already underway, which includes notebooks, books, magazines, brochures and tabloids.
“With the specific function of manufacturing notebooks, about 50 tons of paper are saved for one million units,” said Pupo.
For his part, the director of Investments and Projects of said company, Juan José Valdés Pérez, assured that “this was a necessary process, since the existing machinery from 1986 made spare parts more expensive, and generated a waste of paper that exceeded 12 %”.
Regarding the current one, Valdés concluded that paper waste will only reach 3% and the installed machines will print 65,000 copies per hour, “which represents a saving in electrical energy.”
