Hyundai and Kia recall 500,000 US vehicles due to fire risk

South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia have recalled about 500,000 vehicles in the US due to the risk of spontaneous combustion. It is reported by Bloomberg, citing data from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Automakers have identified a growing risk of engine compartment fires even when the vehicle is turned off. The exact cause of the failure is unknown, but manufacturers believe that an electrical component in the anti-lock braking system could cause an internal short circuit, the US agency said in a statement.

Drivers who were notified of the malfunction were advised to park their vehicles outside and away from other vehicles due to the increased risk of spontaneous combustion.

Hyundai recalled 357,830 vehicles, including Santa Fe SUVs from 2016-2019 and Tucson SUVs from 2014-2015. Kia has recalled 126,747 vehicles, including 2016 Sportage SUVs and K900 sedans built between 2016 and 2018.
