The candidate for the presidential elections, Chairman of the Steering Committee of the National Project Movement Party, Dr. Fathi Bin Shatwan, called for changing the role of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya from managing the crisis between the Libyan parties to finding a practical solution.

Chetwan said in a post on his Facebook account that there has been a lot of talk recently about the resigned UN envoy Abdullah Batili and the eight before him as a reason for the continuation of the Libyan crisis and their inability to resolve it.

He added: “The truth is that Batelli and those before him and those who will come after him will not be able to solve the Libyan crisis because they are commanded and restricted to a specific mission… the United Nations calls it support… that is, supporting the Libyans to resolve their crisis… which in reality is not support for the Libyans, but rather support for the parties to the conflict working in their interests and those who are clinging.” With their gains, the conflict becomes more severe and we move further and further away from a solution.”

The presidential candidate indicated that the current role of the United Nations is designed not to find a solution to the Libyan crisis, but rather is to manage the crisis between the parties to the conflict.

He added: “It is clear that this plan was drawn up by major powers to be implemented by the United Nations to freeze the crisis until the active countries agree with each other on the appropriate solution that achieves their interests in Libya. It started with the Smallat Agreement, which actually froze the crisis, as evidenced that until this moment no results have been produced.” There was nothing noteworthy about it except the invasion of Tripoli.

Shatwan went on to say: “What is the solution? The solution is for the role of the United Nations to change and move from managing the crisis between its selfish parties to a practical solution on the ground. The solution begins with imposing disarmament, organizing its use, demobilizing all illegal forces and integrating them into society to solve the security problem and rebuild.” The army, police, and security institutions are effective institutions affiliated with the state and do not interfere in politics.”

Shatwan continued: “As for the political solution, it is left to the Libyans of all political, societal, and scientific sects, and not to the current parties to the conflict, and under the supervision of the United Nations, where a committee is formed from them that formulates the basic principles of the solution, coexistence, and election laws, and chooses a government of technocrats to implement the solution and hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.”
