BOLZANO. Work continues on Brenner tunnel. All the main components of the mechanical cutter “Wilma” have reached the construction lot “H53 Pfons – Brenner”. In recent days, the main thrust engine and gearbox housing, with a total weight of 264 tonswere delivered to Steinach am Brenner, with exceptional transport. The double shield cutter “Wilma” has a drilling diameter of 10.37 meters and a total weight of 2,700 tonnes. The length is approximately 180 meters.

The cutter consists of approx 80,000 individual pieces and up to 170 trucks are needed to transport them. After a three-month construction period in the assembly hall, “Wilma” will leave for Innsbruck next autumn. The cutter will travel approximately 7.5 kilometers through the west line tunnel. Soon, the pieces of the twin cutter, “Olga”, will also be transported from Schwanau to Steinach am Brenner. Due to roadworks in Stuttgart and the closure of the Arlberg tunnel, the exceptional transport had to travel a longer route than expected, with a detour of around 700 kilometres.
