In an interview with C-SPAN, Republican politician Don Bacon laid out Ukraine’s predicament on the battlefield, saying that if the bills don’t pass, “the Russians will be in Kiev.”
After months of delays and several versions of a foreign aid bill marred by political infighting, House Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled his plan earlier this week to vote on the package as four separate bills on Saturday.
But some Republicans, notably Marjorie Taylor Greene, continue to criticize support for Ukraine and threaten to try to impeach Johnson if he continues to consider the bill.
“Unfortunately, several of my colleagues would like the Russians to win. I don’t know why that is. I think it’s a terrible thing,” Bacon explained.
“Ukraine wants to be free. They want to have a free market economy. They want to be part of the West, and this can change the situation in Europe and Ukraine,” the Republican politician added.
His fellow Republican Dan Crenshaw also expressed similar views earlier in the day.
“My guess is that they want Russia to win so badly that they want to oust the Speaker of the House because of it,” Crenshaw argued. “It’s a strange position.”
According to Bloomberg, House Democrats have said they will support Johnson’s series of bills and could also protect the House speaker from an attempt by radical Republican politicians to oust him.
If the bills are passed in the House of Representatives, they will be sent to the Senate for an additional vote next week.
Meanwhile, President Biden has said he will sign the package immediately after it passes Congress.
