There’s a new top scorer in Major League Soccer at the start of the season, and his name is Lionel Messi.

The Argentine superstar scored twice and provided a superb assist, leading Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over Nashville SC at Chase Stadium.

Messi’s two-goal performance gives him seven goals in MLS, one more than teammate Luis Suarez and five other players.

An eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi has so far scored nine goals and five assists in nine matches in all competitions.

In terms of bad news, Miami saw its midfielder Diego Gomez fall in combat, and leave the confrontation on a stretcher.

In the 38th minute, the Paraguayan international remained on the ground after attempting to press against Nashville goalkeeper Elliot Panicco, near the goal line.

Ironically, Gomez’s effort gave Inter a corner kick, and Sergio Busquets headed a perfect ball from Messi to make it 2-1.

Messi scored his second goal of the match from a penalty (81st).
