At least two children died and fifteen people were injured after a vehicle driven by a woman in an apparent state of intoxication rammed into the building where a birthday party was being held in the municipality of Berlinin the state of Michigan (EEUU).
The Monroe County Sheriff, Troy Goodnoughreported in a press conference that the event occurred around 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) and that the two minors, an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, were siblings.
Nine of the injured, including three children, were taken to hospital in critical condition from the Swan Boat Clubthe party hall where a birthday was celebrated.
The sheriff did not identify the woman who crashed her car into the building, but explained that she is 66 years old, that she was detained without resistance and that she was driving while intoxicated.
The vehicle collided with the north wall of the facility, entered the building and stopped after travel 7 and a half meters inside the place, where a little boy’s birthday party was taking place.
“It is likely that additional criminal charges will be filed against the driver as the investigation progresses,” said Goodnough, who said investigators continue to process evidence at the scene, identify victims, interview witnesses and reunite family members.
