A senior American official announced that the United States will withdraw the license granted to deal with the Venezuelan oil and gas sector, which is considered a re-imposition of sanctions on the Venezuelan energy sector.
The official confirmed during a press conference on Thursday that the general license will not be extended, and that all parties must end dealing with Venezuela by next May 31.
The license issued last October allowed dealing with the Venezuelan oil and gas sector until April 18, despite the imposition of US sanctions on Venezuela.
Some sanctions on Venezuela were lifted after the government of President Nicolas Maduro reached an agreement with the opposition regarding the “transparency of the upcoming presidential elections” scheduled to take place next July.
Later, the Venezuelan authorities prevented a number of opposition figures from participating in the elections, which the United States considered a violation of the agreement, and confirmed that it would reimpose the sanctions it had previously lifted.
