DR Congo: President Félix Tshisekedi invested for a second five-year term

The investiture ceremony of Félix Tshisekedi, 60 years old, took place at the Stade des Martyrs, filled to its maximum capacity of 80,000 seats.

Around twenty African heads of state and delegations and representatives from several dozen other countries were present.

Mr. Rachid Talbi El Alami, President of the House of Representatives, represented HM King Mohammed VI during this official ceremony.

During this event, the Congolese Head of State received the symbols of power from the High Court before delivering the inaugural speech of his second term. The ceremony was marked by a military parade and the firing of 21 cannons.

“I solemnly swear (…) to defend the Constitution and the laws of the Republic, (…), to maintain its independence and the integrity of its territory,” declared the President before the judges of the Constitutional Court. re-elected, before receiving greetings from the customary leaders of the country’s 26 provinces.

“I am aware of your expectations,” declared Félix Tshisekedi in his inauguration speech, referring to unemployment, purchasing power, young people, women, national cohesion.

He promised to take actions, including creating more jobs, protecting household purchasing power, national security, economic diversification, and access to basic services.

In his speech, he denounced the resilient threats against the DRC and the behavior of certain compatriots who shed the blood of the Congolese, while observing a minute of silence in memory of the heroes and victims killed by “barbarism “in the DRC.

“Today, a new era is born, an era of maturity, a magnified era, an era transcended by the renewed oath “Never betray the Congo”,” said re-elected President Félix Tshisekedi.

The presidential election took place at the same time as the legislative, provincial and local elections, a quadruple ballot which began on December 20 and, faced with multiple logistical problems, stretched over several days.

According to the final results of the presidential election, confirmed by the Constitutional Council, President Tshisekedi, in power since January 2019, received 73.47% of the votes.
