Road accidents have increased by 31.25 percent this Eid compared to last time. 407 people were killed in 399 road accidents in 15 days of this Eid. And 1398 people were injured.

Saturday (April 20) Dhaka Reporters Unity in a press conference organized by Jatri Kalyan Samity, Secretary General of the organization. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury highlighted this information.

This information has come out in the report of the road accident monitoring cell of the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association, from the starting day of the Eid journey, i.e. from April 4 to April 18, till the return to the workplace after the Eid.

At the same time, 24 people were killed and 21 injured in 18 railway accidents. 7 people were killed and 5 people were injured in 2 accidents on the waterway.

438 people were killed and 1424 people were injured in a total of 419 accidents on road, rail and sea.

And 328 people were killed and 565 injured in 304 road accidents during Eid-ul-Fitr in 2023. Compared to the previous year, road accidents this Eid have increased by 31.25 percent, fatalities by 24.08 percent, injuries by 147.43 percent.

According to the report, since Eid-centered road accidents are increasing at an alarming rate every year, the organization has been monitoring the issue of road accidents, extra fare collection and passenger harassment during Eid trips for a long time.

Observations have shown that 20 percent more people traveled than the target due to the long holiday this Eid. As a result of continuous development in the past 15 years of the current government, the speed of vehicles has increased as the condition of roads and highways in the country is better than before. Due to the free movement of motorcycles on Padma Setu along with all the roads and highways of the country, 7.5 percent of the total passengers traveled on motorcycles. Although various regulatory agencies of the government and law and order forces were on the ground, the anarchy of collecting extra fares and harassment of passengers on the road reached its peak. Due to the anarchy of collecting extra fares in public transport on the occasion of Eid, poor people have to go home on Eid by risking their lives as passengers on the roof of buses, trains, open trucks, goods transport.

According to the report, as always, motorcycles are at the top of the accidents. 165 people were killed and 240 injured in 198 motorcycle accidents this Eid. Which is 49.62 percent of the total road accidents, 40.54 percent of the dead and 30.37 percent of the injured.

87 drivers, 31 transport workers, 40 pedestrians, 75 women, 47 children, 27 students, 8 law enforcement officers, 4 teachers, 1 political party leaders, 1 Brave freedom fighters, 2 doctors identified.
