No fewer than 46,000 doses of rabies vaccine will be distributed in the forests of southern Quebec starting Monday because of American raccoon contamination.

A specimen from Vermont carrying this disease was recorded in the last few days less than 10 kilometers from the border with Quebec.

This is what pressures the Ministry of Environment to act to prevent the spread of this disease.

Capsules will be placed in the forests of 17 municipalities in Estrie and Montérégie.

Its smell attracts animals such as foxes and raccoons, in particular, so that they eat the vaccine and become immunized.

“It is a cause for concern in a sense, because it has been a few years since we received any vaccination, in practice, that wild animal populations are no longer immune to this disease,” explains the person responsible for the file at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change of Quebec, Marianne Gagnier.

“We’re out and about,” she says. It’s really a matter of protecting human health like rabies, it’s a deadly disease.”

Veterinarian Caroline Kilsdonk suggests that it is strongly recommended to vaccinate your pet against this disease.

“They can approach wild animals more easily than we can,” she says.
