On Saturday, the news spread across Lithuania that 72-year-old G. Kirkilas left Anapilin.
Former politician and MEP Justas Vincas Paleckis, who communicated a lot with G. Kirkil, was stunned by the news of his friend’s death. He testified that there was not the slightest sign that Gediminas was sick or unwell.
“Not only did he not complain. Gediminas was one of those people who knows how not to show if something is wrong”, – lrytas.lt said JVPalecki.
Former colleagues mostly met on the tennis court.
“My conscience is clear. When we last played tennis three weeks ago, our team lost to G. Kirkilo’s team. I am happy about that today,” JVPaleckis recalled.
JVPaleckis, who is ten years older than G. Kirkilas, noticed that recently more and more older club players sat down on the bench to rest more often.
“But not G. Kirkilas. He looked very energetic and moved even during breaks,” said the 82-year-old former politician.
At that time, the signatory, former ambassador Algirdas Kumža for the portal lrytas.lt told that the last time he had a short conversation with G. Kirkil was at the premiere of the movie “President”.
“I didn’t feel anything suspicious or strange, Gediminas was cheerful and friendly, as always,” A. Kumža recalled the last meeting, although he pointed out that G. Kirkilas was not in good health.
Former Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas died on Saturday at the age of 73. Police representative Ramūnas Matonis confirmed this to Elta on Saturday morning.
G. Kirkilas was born in 1951. in the capital. 1978-1989 belonged to the USSR, later to the Lithuanian Communist Party. in 1990 G. Kirkilas was elected as the first deputy of the Lithuanian Democratic Labor Party (LDDP) and belonged to this political force for several years.
Since 2001 became a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), 2007-2009. chaired the Social Democrats.
The politician has been elected to the Seimas since 1992. and worked in the parliament for several terms – until 2020. in 2017 retired from the ranks of the Social Democrats in November.
G. Kirkilas served as Minister of National Defense in 2004-2006, headed the Government in 2006-2008.
G. Kirkilas in 2003 was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great, and a year later – the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Vytis Cross.
