Male: Elections are to be held in India’s neighboring country Maldives on Sunday. Maldives is fully prepared for the 20th parliamentary elections, the results of which can be declared on 28 April. According to sources, the preliminary results will be declared by midnight tomorrow and the final results will be out by Monday morning. Elections are to be held on a total of 93 seats. Currently, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party dominates the People’s Majlis (Parliament) with 41 seats. Due to lack of majority in Parliament, it is becoming difficult for Muizzu to make any law. There are 284,663 registered voters in Maldives, who will cast their votes at 602 polling stations to elect their leader. Mohammad Muizzu won the presidency in September 2023 by defeating Ibrahim Solih. Muijju is an anti-India leader. During the Presidential elections, he ran his entire campaign in the name of India Out. He also resorted to anti-India sentiments while campaigning for the parliamentary elections. Due to which this election has become very important. If Muizzu wins, it will once again be seen as India’s defeat.
What changed in Maldives politics
Maldives politics has seen a lot of ups and downs since the presidential elections last year. Maldivian politics was dominated by two camps, now it has divided into four. Former President Mohammed Nasheed and his supporters left the then ruling MDP to form a new party called ‘The Democrats’. At the same time, the differences between former President Abdullah Yameen and Muizzu have increased even more. Yameen, who was earlier jailed on corruption and money laundering charges, formed the People’s National Front (PNF) and decided to field his own candidates. Local media have said that their candidates will run independently, as the party did not register in time for the elections.
Boycott Maldives did a great job, Indians made Muizzu’s condition miserable
a lot changed in the elections
Political experts say the 2023 presidential election was dominated by the India Out campaign attacking Solih’s foreign policy. But Sunday’s election will be fought on domestic issues. Economic stress, employment and development of critical infrastructure are issues that have attracted attention. Muizzu has been continuously asking the public to give him majority. However, this election is not so easy for him, because just a few days after becoming the President, his party had to face defeat in the Male Mayor election by a huge margin. Apart from this, this election is also a test of his pro-China policy.
