CHICAGO — Bryan de la Cruz hit a two-run homer off Adbert Alzolay in the ninth inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Venezuelan Luis Arráez had three more hits for Miami, which had lost four of five games. Dominican Jesús Sánchez and Nick Gordon each had two hits.
Arráez is hitting .347 (17 for 49) in his last 12 games. He singled with one out in the ninth, and De la Cruz followed with a drive to left-center field for his fifth home run after hitting home runs in each of his previous two games.
It was the fourth blown save in seven chances for Alzolay (1-2).
Mexican Javier Assad allowed three hits in 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander retired 11 consecutive batters after allowing a double and a walk to start the game. In his previous three starts, Assad allowed four runs in 16 2/3 innings.
For the Marlins, Dominican Jesús Sánchez is 4-2. Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rivera 1-0 with one scored.
For the Cubs, Panamanian Miguel Amaya is 3-1. Dominican Alexander Canario 1-for-4 with one run scored.
