The defense ministers of the member states will also join the discussion of the foreign ministers on the European Union’s (EU) assistance to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, in order to jointly decide on the possible military support. At the meeting, the foreign ministers will also focus on the events in the Middle East and the situation in Sudan.

After the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Braže will participate in the high-level forum “Regional Security and Cooperation”, which will gather the foreign ministers of the EU member states and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and where regional and global security issues will be discussed.

As LETA was informed by the Military Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Defense, during the meeting Latvia will inform about the agreement with Ukraine on long-term support and security obligations, which the presidents of both countries signed on April 11 during the Three Seas Initiative summit in Vilnius.

The agreement envisages comprehensive military and non-military assistance for Ukraine’s defense against aggression, as well as Latvia’s support for Ukraine on its way to EU and NATO membership.

It has already been reported that Latvia has committed to providing Ukraine with annual military support in the amount of 0.25% of the gross domestic product until 2026, as well as five million euros in annual support for the reconstruction of Ukraine. Latvia is the first of the Baltic states to sign such an agreement.

Similarly, Latvia plans to train at least 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers in 2024. Latvia, together with Great Britain, has undertaken to lead the drone coalition. So far, it has raised €500 million in funding for the purchase of drones in support of Ukraine.
