A piece of a top-secret Cold War-era target missile has been found on a beach in Massachusetts.

As Day.Az reports with reference to RBC, officials told Fox News about this.

The mysterious fragment was discovered about a week ago, on April 13, on the beach of Cape Cod. In appearance it resembled part of an airplane fuselage, but in reality it turned out to be an element of an RCAT rocket – a remote-controlled aerial target.

Officials said it was part of an old Cold War-era unmanned aircraft that was used for target practice during training at the former US military camp Camp Wellfleet. As Fox News clarifies, the test site was classified.

During the Cold War, the RCAT program was state-of-the-art for its time, classified by the military as “top secret.” National Park Service officials said they would not disclose any plans for the wreck’s future.

The aircraft, which were equipped with the missile, launched the RCAT at speeds ranging from 0 to 60 mph (approximately 97 km/h), the department explained. The planes moved at a speed of 362 km/h and could make up to 20 flights before they were noticed by enemy troops and shot down. With the help of RСAT, it was possible to “hit five or six targets” in a day, the service clarified.
