Telekom customers are the target of fraudsters, consumer advocates say. The criminals want to access the recipients’ data via email.

“Important: Unusual account activity”: With this warning in the subject of a fraud message to Telekom customers, criminals want to get the data of the recipients of this email. The consumer advice centers announce this on their website.

In the message, the fraudsters point out that the recipient’s customer account has allegedly been blocked for security reasons. “To protect your information, we have restricted access to your inbox, contact list, and calendar,” the scam message reads.

And further: We are working on a solution. However, this requires the cooperation of the email recipient and Telekom customer.

It is best to move the message to the spam folder

A link in the email labeled “Download and fill out the form” takes those affected to a website where they are asked to enter their personal information. Only then can the customer account supposedly be restored.

“However, we advise you not to click on this link, but rather to move this attempted fraud to the spam folder without being answered,” write the consumer advocates. The message was clearly a phishing attempt.

What is Phishing?

In so-called phishing, criminals try to get personal data from their victims. This includes the name, email address, passwords or date of birth.

The criminals can sell this data or use it themselves to log into online accounts such as the bank account and plunder it.
