Meg Bennett became a TV star with her roles in “Shadow of Passion” and “General Hospital.” Now the actress has died at the age of 75.
Helen Margaret Bennett, as the actress’s real name was, grew up in Pasadena, California. She recognized her passion early on and studied acting at Northwestern University. At the age of 23, she moved to New York City and was part of the original cast of the Broadway production “Grease” – the start of her career.
In 1980, Meg Bennett was cast as Julia Newman in the soap Shadows of Passion. This was followed by further roles in series such as “California Clan”. “Meg has lost her battle with cancer,” her family announced in the US daily newspaper “Los Angeles Times”. She enjoyed her job until the end. “She dedicatedly worked with children, wrote and was involved with her far-flung family and friends,” her relatives explain.
Meg Bennett is survived by her husband Robert Guza, Jr., whom she met while working on “General Hospital.” “They would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year,” the family writes. Her brother, her sister, her two stepdaughters, her four grandchildren and “a host” of nieces and nephews also mourn the American.
Meg Bennett has won numerous awards throughout her career. In 1995 she was awarded a Daytime Emmy for best screenplay for “General Hospital”. She also received three Writers Guild of America Awards for the series. To avoid confusion at the awards ceremonies, she changed her name from Helen Margaret Bennett to Meg Bennett: According to her, a Helen Bennett was already registered with the Screen Actors Guild.
