CNN, a leading American media outlet, is causing controversy after it broadcast live the self-immolation incident that occurred in front of the courthouse during the trial of former President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred at Collect Pond Park in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court around 1:30 pm on the 19th. Inside the court, a trial was being held regarding former President Trump’s charges of ‘silencing sexual misconduct’.
Supporters gathered in the park outside the courthouse. CNN news host Laura Coates was also meeting trial experts here and conducting her live interview.
At this time, a man started an uproar in the park, throwing leaflets into the air and setting himself on fire.
Coates stopped the interview and immediately began broadcasting live. He initially failed to properly assess the situation and commented, “There’s an active shooter in the park.”
Coats, who later recognized that it was a case of self-immolation, explained, “A man set himself on fire.” The screen showed a man engulfed in flames on a bench. This scene was exposed to viewers for a while.
Meanwhile, Coates said, “We’re seeing his body on fire right now. It’s a chaotic situation here. “You can smell burning flesh and the smell of some (flammable) substance burning,” he said, vividly describing the scene for about two minutes.
The man was taken to the hospital after the fire was extinguished, but he eventually died. He was identified as someone in his 30s from Florida.
Afterwards, a heated argument broke out about the broadcast. The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 20th, “CNN’s live broadcast drew both praise and criticism.”
While there was criticism that “she showed a provocative and horrifying side as is,” there was mixed praise, saying, “no matter what anyone said, she did a great job.” Supporters initially mistook it for a shooting incident and praised him for not losing his composure even when his life was in danger.
However, the NYT pointed out, “Other broadcasters on the scene at the time also reported the incident, but CNN’s report was the most provocative and explicit among them.” Fox News, which was initially broadcasting the scene, immediately turned the camera and the host apologized, saying, “I’m sorry for showing this scene.”
“My instincts were telling me what I was seeing,” Coates later said in a news release. “My mouth was explaining what I was seeing over and over again, but my eyes and nose were actually trying to take back what they were seeing.”
CNN is known to have recognized the controversy and issued instructions not to rebroadcast the scene.
