Fewer Russian citizens have begun to come to Armenia amid political tensions between Yerevan and Moscow. The number of those who left the country has sharply increased.
As Day.Az reports, the Armenian publication “168.zham” reported this, citing statistical data in its article.
“If in the first two months of last year more than 207 thousand Russian citizens entered Armenia, then this year there were 171.7 thousand, almost 36 thousand less. The entry of Russian citizens decreased by more than 17 percent.
It is clear that active flows of Russian citizens have played an important role in the high economic growth recorded in Armenia in recent years. Especially considering that a significant part of those who came here were for business purposes. There were also a large number of tourist visits, which also brought in serious money and economic activity. But gradually these flows began to thin out,” the article says.
According to official data, the entry of Russian citizens into Armenia this year has decreased at a fairly rapid pace: “The reasons for this, of course, are not difficult to understand. The problem is not only the recent tensions between Armenia and Russia, but also the fact that favorable conditions have not been created in Armenia In order to properly manage these flows, serve them and direct them to long-term goals, many obstacles were created for Russian citizens who faced a massive increase in prices in Armenia. It did not take long to realize that staying here is an expensive pleasure even for people. Russian citizens with relatively high incomes and living standards. Therefore, those who came preferred to leave gradually. This is also evident from the indicators of entry and exit at the beginning of the year. This year not only the arrival of citizens from Russia to Armenia has decreased, but also the departure of others. In other words, more people left than arrived. The outflow from Armenia at the beginning of the year exceeds the inflow by almost 8 thousand.”
In conclusion, the publication emphasizes that this means that those who came earlier and stayed in Armenia are gradually leaving, returning to Russia or moving to other countries, where living conditions are much more favorable, life is cheaper and more comfortable: “Of course, the victim of this will be Armenia, citizen and economy.”
