Monday came with a blanket of snow, fixed in many parts of the country. The view of the nest is not cozy either – the viewers of the live broadcast are still waiting for the birds and hope for a soon improvement in the weather.
Although meteorologists are predicting a large amount of precipitation today, the air temperature is expected to be within +1…+8°, which means that the snow will melt quickly. In addition, according to current forecasts, at the end of the week the air temperature could even rise to +20° in some places. This allows us to hope that the weather will improve soon without too much difficulty in feeding the birds.
You can watch the live broadcast HERE!
Mamma laid the first egg in the second week of April, and four more were laid during the following week. In the nest, the pair of terns settled in at the beginning of April.
The natural nesting place of the plovers is trees whose branches or the tops of broken trunks are able to support the weight of the nest (its weight can be even more than 500 kg). Considering the fact that it is not so easy to find trees with suitable branches for nest building, white storks choose electric poles as a man-made and suitable alternative living place. Currently, almost 80% of the population of white storks in Latvia nests on power poles.
In order to make nesting safer for both birds and the surrounding residents, as well as to reduce the risks of power supply interruptions, “Sadales tīkls” installs metal nest bases in the low-voltage power grid, where safety reasons allow. On the other hand, when dangerous situations are detected, the nests can be removed from the supports for safety reasons. This is done with the permission of the Nature Conservancy and mostly outside the stork nesting season.
If you have the desire and the opportunity to house storks on your property, recommendations for creating an artificial nest base can be found in the brochure “White stork nest bases”, which is available on the website of the Latvian Ornithology Society (LOB) at www.lob.lv. On the other hand, residents can inquire about the purchase and placement of supports or ready-made metal bases at local electrical installation companies.
LDF’s live broadcast can be viewed on the homepage of “Sadales nettas” and on the LDF YouTube channel, as well as on the portal Dabasdati.lv and on the LDF website (in the Live broadcasts section). LDF has been providing live broadcasts of natural events on the Internet for more than 10 years, but this is the first camera whose technical system is installed on an active overhead power line support. In the last decade, live bird watching has gained wide popularity all over the world, and this live broadcast of white storks is also followed by interested people not only from Latvia, but also from other countries.
