Winter athletes injured in avalanche in Tyrol rescued

According to initial information, six winter sports enthusiasts were buried in an avalanche in the area of ​​the 2,602 meter high Schafseitenspitze in the Tyrolean Wipptal on Sunday afternoon. A person was injured and freed from the snow masses and flown to the Innsbruck clinic, the police confirmed a report by ORF Tirol. The five others could apparently be recovered unharmed, the APA said. A search for other possible victims was still ongoing.

For the time being, there was no information about the exact course of the accident or the identity of the winter sports enthusiasts. As the Tyrol control center announced, an avalanche went off the Schafseitenspitze in the direction of Navis and almost at the same time another direction Schmirn. No survivors were found under the latter. The Steinach am Brenner, St. Jodok and Matrei am Brenner mountain rescue services were deployed, as well as several emergency helicopters and the “Libelle” police helicopter.
