Napoli has become more complicated in the fight for a place in European competitions next season. This Saturday (20), coach Francesco Calzona’s team lost to Empoli, away from home, 1-0, in the 33rd round of the Italian Championship. Cerri, right at the beginning of the match, scored the winning goal.
The result leaves Napoli, current Calcio champions, in a modest eighth place, with 49 points, further and further away from the Champions League. Roma, in fifth and now with two games in hand, have 55. Empoli is moving further and further away from the relegation zone, reaching 31 points. Frosinone, the first team in Z3, has 26.
The teams were still studying each other on the field when the game’s goal was scored. After four minutes, Cerri received a cross from Gvasi and, with his head, gave goalkeeper Meret no chance to save. Napoli tried hard to score an equalizer and missed a few chances, but the first half ended 1-0.
In the second stage, the visitors continued on top in search of equality. Coach Francesco Calzona tried at all costs to change the outlook of the match. Not even the arrivals of Raspadori and Simeone gave the expected result. Thus, the Neapolitans saw the team go without winning the second consecutive match.
In the next round, Napoli will host Roma at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, on Sunday (28), at 1pm (Brasília time). On the same day, Empoli faces Atalanta, in Bergamo, at 10 am.
