A series of earthquakes shook Taiwan between Monday and Tuesdaythe strongest of all being the one that reached a magnitude of 6.3 with its epicenter in Hualien, in the east of the island, according to the Central Meteorological Agency.

Precisely in Hualien it had its epicenter of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3 and that left at least 17 dead and more than 1,100 injured.

The first tremor this Monday, of magnitude 5.5, occurred at 5:08 p.m. (09:08 GMT), according to the agency, and could be felt in the capital, Taipei.

It was followed by a series of replicas and, according to AFP journalists, the strongest movements occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday (6:30 p.m. GMT on Monday).

“I was washing my hands and suddenly I felt what seemed like vertigo,” Olivier Bonifacio, a tourist staying in Taipei’s Da’an district, told AFP.

“I went into my room and I realized that the building was swaying and I heard the desk creak,” he said, adding that it was then that he realized it was another aftershock.

According to the Central Meteorological Agencya, the shock had a magnitude of 6.0 and was followed six minutes later by another of magnitude 6.3.

The United States Geological Survey reported that they were magnitude 6.1 and 6, respectively.

Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, since the island is located near the junction of two tectonic plates.

After the earthquake on April 3, hundreds of aftershocks were recorded. That quake was the strongest in Taiwan since the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the island in September 1999 and left 2,400 dead.
