A serious challenge against the institutions of the democratic State occurred in Sperchiada Fthiotida, with strangers raising the Junta flag in the local agricultural cooperative.

They chose yesterday, the day before the sad anniversary of the colonels’ coup in 1967.

The incident took place in the warehouses of the Agricultural Cooperative of Lamia. After the reactions that were caused, the manager of the warehouse took down the Junta flag and raised the Greek one again.

According to the Deputy Mayor of Makrakomi, Panos Kontogiorgos, the incident was noticed at noon on Saturday, April 20, and it is the first time that something like this has happened in the area.

A case file was opened for the incident, by order of the prosecutor, and the perpetrator or perpetrators are being sought.

The coup d’état of April 21 is known as the armed overthrow of the Government of Panagiotis Kanellopoulos on April 21, 1967 by a group of officers led by Artillery Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos, Armored Brigadier Stylianos Pattakos and Artillery Colonel Nikolaos Makarezos, with the participation of Attica military units .

The first tanks came out at 2 in the morning, to occupy all the strategic points of the capital (Parliament, Ministries, EIR, OTE, Palace).

At the same time, the radio announces that a number of articles of the Constitution, which protect fundamental rights, are being repealed.
With the coup, the democratic government was overthrown in Greece and a military dictatorship was imposed, which lasted with the change of various governments until July 24, 1974.
