The renovation of the Plaza Grande in Mérida that began this week is focused on being more pedestrian-friendly, in addition to beautifying and increasing the functionality of the emblematic site, according to the project promoted by the Government of Yucatán.

The transformation includes enhancing the natural features of the site with the relocation of foreign species and the planting of new native vegetation.

Aref Karam Espósitos, Secretary of Public Works, assured that most of the trees will be preserved to maintain the green essence of the square, crucial for the shade and avian life of the place.

The works began on April 16 and it is projected that the work will end on August 15 with an investment of 137.5 million pesos.

As part of the adaptation of the roads surrounding the Plaza Grande, a pedestrian area, a vehicular area and a mixed area will be established. In addition, restrictions will be applied to reduce the flow of motor vehicles.

INNOVATIONS

The plaza project, whose vocation is the recreation of Yucatecans and the delight of tourists, will have a safe corridor for everyone, a dynamic fountain, better lighting, as well as the installation of street furniture.

In addition, a new larger flagpole will be installed, 35 meters high, and the existing floor will be replaced with prefabricated concrete elements, redesigning the entrances to the park to facilitate the passage of people with disabilities and modifying the width of the pedestrian walkways. new flowerbeds and LED lighting will be installed on both posts and trees.

“It is important that our government invests in making our public spaces safer and more accessible. The idea of ​​unifying the level of the street and the sidewalks to facilitate access seems excellent to me, especially thinking about our elderly people and those who have mobility difficulties,” said Carlos León Pech, a resident of the center.

MITIGATE AFFECTIONS

The Secretary of Public Works, Karam Espósitos, highlighted that he coordinated closely with the municipal police to minimize inconvenience and generate agile traffic through the area.

All buildings and businesses surrounding the Plaza Grande will have pedestrian access and there will be signage to inform about detours, closed streets and alternative routes.
