SPÖ regional leader Sven Hergovich and National Council member Melanie Erasim will celebrate May 1st with the Hollabrunner comrades. This year the SPÖ Pulkau is organizing the festival on the highest day of social democracy.
As is well known, May 1st is Labor Day and the highest holiday of social democracy. That’s why the comrades in the district traditionally invite people to the May celebrations – this time in Pulkau.
“After we were pleased last year with a district May celebration that was perfectly organized by the Seefeld-Kadolz local group, this year the SPÖ Pulkau team has agreed to hold the celebrations in Pulkau,” says district chairman Richard Pregel. The Social Democrats gather at 3 p.m. in front of the fire station, where the traditional costume band starts the May march with a concert.
The procession then marches to the town hall, where the festival rally will be held at 4 p.m. The head of the Lower Austrian Social Democrats, Sven Hergovich, also comes to Pulkau to give the celebratory speech. The second speaker is Weinviertler National Council member Melanie Erasim.
The local group from Pulkau will provide food and drink afterwards. Pregel and his team of children’s friends in the Hollabrunn district also organize a colorful games festival for the youngest children. “We are looking forward to May 1st in Pulkau!” said the second district chairman Stefan Hinterberger.
For May 1st:
- In 1886, the North American labor movement called for a general strike on May 1 to enforce the eight-hour day, which led to days of mass strikes and demonstrations across America.
- On the evening of May 3, 1886, the workers’ protest in Chicago ended bloodily due to the clash between demonstrators and police, and violence then escalated.
- In memory of the victims of this cruelly ended movement, May 1st was proclaimed two years later as the “Day of Struggle of the Labor Movement”.
