Senior United Nations officials have warned the UN Security Council of the dangers of the emergence of a new front in Sudan related to controlling the city of El Fasher in Darfur, where the population is on the verge of famine.
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, said, “The country is witnessing a huge, entirely man-made crisis, one year after the start of the war between the army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.”
She added, “The warring parties have repeatedly ignored calls to cease hostilities, including those issued by this Council, and instead, they have accelerated their preparations for more battles,” speaking of “the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces continuing their campaigns to recruit civilians.”
In particular, it expressed concern about reports of a possible “imminent” attack by the Rapid Support Forces on El Fasher, which raises the risk of opening “a new front in the conflict.”
