The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that 21 Chinese military aircraft had been spotted in the vicinity of the island, a month before the inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te.
The ministry said in a statement, “17 aircraft (out of 21) crossed the middle line, which represents an unofficial border between China and Taiwan in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, and is not recognized by Beijing.”
The statement added that the Taiwan Armed Forces “are monitoring these activities thanks to monitoring systems and have deployed appropriate means to respond appropriately.”
China considers the autonomous island an integral part of its territory, vowing to restore it by force if necessary.
The intensification of these Chinese violations comes in the context of a strategy that experts call the “gray zone,” a strategy based on acts of intimidation that do not amount to acts of war.
