The Government of Jamaica has officially announced its recognition of the State of Palestine, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith

This decision comes after deliberations in the Jamaican Cabinet, where Smith confirmed that recognition of the State of Palestine comes within the framework of her continued support for the two-state solution as the only viable option to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine, in order to ensure Israel’s security and support the dignity and rights of Palestinians.

The Jamaican Foreign Minister added, “This decision reflects her country’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which seeks to promote mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between countries, and affirm the rule of international law and the right of peoples to self-determination.”

On the other hand, the Jamaican government expressed its concern about the situation in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis, calling for an immediate ceasefire and increased access for humanitarian aid to the region.

Jamaica renewed its support for all efforts made to stop the escalation and achieve lasting peace in the region, stressing the need to resort to diplomatic solutions to ensure the safety and sovereignty of peoples.

With this decision, Jamaica joins a list of 142 countries that previously recognized the State of Palestine.
