According to the medical community on the 26th, the human eye is filled with a colorless and transparent gel-like tissue called vitreous body. When the vitreous body becomes cloudy, it casts a shadow on the retina, making it feel like something is floating in front of the eye.
As we age, a phenomenon called ‘vitreous liquefaction’ occurs, in which part of the gel-like vitreous body separates into water and fiber. The vitreous body detaches from the retina due to vitreous liquefaction and contraction of the vitreous gel, which is called posterior vitreous detachment. It is one of the common causes of rhinorrhea.
Changes in the vitreous body are a normal physiological aging process. Physiological rhinitis commonly occurs after the age of 50 and becomes more common with age.
However, if you have severe myopia, have surgery on the eye, or have suffered from a disease such as bleeding or inflammation in the eye, vitreous changes may occur early, causing rhinitis at a young age.
In many cases, rhinitis appears as a symptom of various eye diseases. Vitreous liquefaction or shrinkage causes the retina to be pulled, and if the pulling force is too strong or concentrated in a specific area of the retina, the retina or retinal blood vessels may tear.
Along with the occurrence of clouding, if photoopia (flashing in front of the eyes) persists for a long time, one corner of the field of vision appears obscured, and vision decreases, retinal tear or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is suspected, so a visit to the hospital is required.
It is an inflammatory disease of the eye, and rhinitis also occurs when inflammatory substances float in the vitreous body. In these cases, eye pain, redness, decreased vision, and headaches occur, so if these symptoms accompany rhinorrhea, you should undergo a thorough eye examination. Additionally, if rhinitis occurs in a patient with diabetes or high blood pressure, vitreous hemorrhage should be suspected.
If the number or size of floating objects does not change, there is no problem. However, if ▲floating objects suddenly increase or become larger, or are accompanied by photoopia and do not go away, ▲if the corner of the field of vision appears obscured as if a curtain has been drawn, ▲if visual acuity deteriorates, ▲if eye pain, headaches, or bleeding are accompanied, a detailed examination is required. Must receive it. If a retinal tear is left untreated, it can progress to retinal detachment, which can lead to permanent vision loss and even blindness.
To check the condition of the retina and vitreous body in relation to rhinorrhea, a fundus examination that dilates the pupil (mydriasis) is essential. A fundus examination can check for retinal tears and retinal detachments, and fundus photography can also be helpful. Recently, wide-angle fundus photography has been used clinically to provide an overall picture of the retina.
