Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that he will suspend his public duties until next week to decide whether he wants to continue leading the government or not, after a court began an investigation into his wife.

He wrote on the “X” social media platform: “I need to stop and think… I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worth it… and whether I should continue to lead the government or give up this honor.”

Sanchez, who has been leading Spain since 2018, said he will appear before the media next Monday to announce his decision.

This surprising announcement came after a Spanish court said, on Wednesday, that it had begun a preliminary investigation into whether Begonia Gomez, Sanchez’s wife, had committed the crime of influence peddling and corruption in her private business.

Sanchez considered that the seriousness of the criticism to which he and his wife were subjected “deserves a thoughtful response.”

The court did not disclose other details because the case is closed and is still in a preliminary stage, and merely said that the investigation came after a complaint filed by an anti-corruption group called “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands), whose leader is linked to the far-right movement.

The group said that the prime minister’s wife “exploited her husband’s influence and influence to provide sponsorship for a master’s degree program at the university she was running.”
