Actor Ashish Vidyarthi, who has been working in the film industry for more than three decades, was recently seen in ‘Sunflower Season 2’. In this interview, he told us his opinion about his character, time spent in Delhi and OTT.
Actor Ashish Vidyarthi, who has played 99 percent negative roles in his career, has appeared in a completely different style in ‘Sunflower’. He says, ‘I have done 99 percent negative roles in the 32 years of my career, but after doing so much, when Vikas gave me a comic role, I felt that he is giving me a comedy role? My first reaction was that I enjoyed it, I should do it.
‘There is a lot of difference in today’s Delhi’
Ashish belongs to Delhi. Regarding Delhi, he says, ‘I was born in Delhi, I grew up here and have been in Mumbai since 1992. I have done more than three hundred films in about 11 languages. I roam around. I spend my life doing fun things. There is a lot of difference in today’s Delhi. Everything has changed. I myself have changed. Change is normal, but people have got the resources. After the advent of OTT, a person used to talk about 12 to 3, 9 to 12 and 6 to 9, he can watch entertainment at any time. Not only Delhi but the whole world is changing. We are all part and reason of that change. Regarding his series, he says, ‘The basic theme of Sunflower is how drama happens in a very average middle class place. Which we generally take to the level of evil that people are not right, not good. He has made a joke regarding that. There is a black comedy in that. Mr. Iyer is playing in this.
‘If you have experience, you will play well’
After playing negative roles for years, did you have to do any special preparation after suddenly getting a comedy role? Regarding this he says, ‘To be honest, as an actor, you have been preparing for years, that preparation is now done for you. After that, to speak the lines given to you, you will play the role given to you to the best of your skills. If you have accumulated those years of experience within yourself, then you can do anything. But it is true that when you move towards a character, then you mold your mental state into that character. You speak the truth of that character in your lines, then that character becomes a true character.
‘No work is small for an actor’
Regarding OTT, the actor says, ‘When we make a film, there are top knots, there are cameras and the script is written. After that a business decision is taken whether to release it on OTT or cinema, or to release it first on cinema and then on OTT. This is a different thing. No work is big or small for an actor. You do your work considering it equal. When you decide that a particular thing is most important to you, your commitment towards it will change. After that you will be able to work on it with your skills.
