Every April 26, in Peru and in various corners of the world, Secretary’s Day is celebrated, a date designed to honor the crucial role that these professionals play in the business community.

Beyond being mere organizers of documents or agendas, secretaries are authentic leaders whose actions, no matter how small they may seem, contribute to the functioning, transformation and progress of organizations.

The origin of this celebration dates back to 1868, when American inventors Carlos Glidden and Christopher Sholes designed the first practical typewriter.

While this revolutionary invention did not initially arouse great confidence on the part of Sholes, the latter’s daughter, Lillian Sholes, became the first typist to demonstrate its use in public, thus paving the way for what we know today as secretaries.

The successful commercialization of the typewriter, thanks to Remington’s business vision, catapulted Lillian Sholes into history, making her an icon of the profession.

Years later, in 1950, the companies manufacturing these devices, including the famous Remington, organized typing contests to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Lillian Sholes. These contests became so popular that they became an annual tradition in several countries.

In our country, Secretary’s Day was made official on April 26 at the request of the Peruvian Association of Secretaries, following the example of an agreement made by the Congress of Argentina with the Peruvian Government.

Through a Supreme Decree of the Ministry of Labor in 1980, this date was established as a formal recognition of the work of secretaries in the country.

But this date is not only significant in Peru, it is also celebrated in other countries such as the United States, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Paraguay.

On the other hand, in Argentina and Uruguay, the commemoration takes place on September 4, although the purpose is the same: to pay tribute to these professionals who play a vital role in the dynamics of companies.

Often, the work of secretaries goes unnoticed in the day-to-day life of companies, overshadowed by the more visible responsibilities of other positions.

However, their contribution is invaluable: from efficiently managing the boss’s agenda to coordinating important meetings and events, secretaries are the engine that drives the business machine.

In an increasingly automated and digitalized world, the role of secretaries has evolved, but their importance remains fundamental.

In addition to traditional administrative skills, these professionals are now expected to be adept at technology, communication and problem solving, constantly adapting to the changing demands of the work environment.

Therefore, on this Secretary’s Day, it is important to stop and reflect on the value of these professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of companies.
