“It is hardly possible to say today that the Suwalki corridor can be the most unsafe place on Earth. I think the more dangerous places are Ukraine, as well as the Middle East, the Gaza Strip. However, there is a potential threat, which is precisely why these military exercises were prepared here,” the Polish president said at the press conference.
According to him, it is especially important to show Russia or other possible aggressors that Lithuania, Poland and other NATO countries are ready to repel any attack.
“It is very important for a potential attacker to see that (…) we have the capacity, we have the consensus, we have the will. And that, according to the fifth article of the NATO agreement, if any country is threatened (…) they would see that the allies are equipped to defend those countries”, emphasized A. Duda.
The head of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, who observed the exercises together with the Polish president, also emphasized that he does not consider the Suwalki corridor the most dangerous place in the world, but, according to him, due to potential threats, it is still important to jointly develop the military capabilities of NATO countries.
“Strategically, geographically (Suwalki Corridor – ELTA) is a place to which we must pay increased attention. The Suvalki Corridor factor is also included in NATO’s regional plans and we all understand that this isthmus between Belarus (…) and Kaliningrad, an enclave of the Russian Federation, can actually strategically imply an attempt to break through and cut off the defending NATO forces here in the Baltic States from the rest of the forces.” , he said.
“(It is important that the Suwalki Corridor – ELTA) turns from an unsafe aspect into a security aspect,” the Lithuanian leader added.
This is what the leaders of Poland and Lithuania said on Friday after the joint military exercise “Brave Griffin 24-II” of both countries.
