North Korea’s State Aerospace Engineering General Administration will continue to enhance the country’s aerospace reconnaissance capabilities in response to the militarization of space by the United States and its allies. This is stated in a statement by a representative of the department, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“The United States uses outer space as a military tool to deter other countries,” says the document, the text of which is quoted by the Korean Central News Agency. A representative of the Aerospace Engineering Directorate noted that “the most dangerous intrigues of the United States aimed at the militarization of space are most seriously observed on the Korean Peninsula.”
“Due to the reckless and dangerous machinations of the United States <...> in the APR [Азиатско-Тихоокеанский регион]including the Korean Peninsula, there is still an increased risk of a violation of strategic parity at any time and the outbreak of actual war between states,” he noted, calling “the hegemonic intentions of the United States to militarize space and turn it into a battlefield” as the main threat to global peace and security.
The ultimate goal of such actions to militarize space in the DPRK is considered to be “a preventive nuclear strike.” He called Washington’s introduction of a draft UN Security Council resolution on the non-placement of nuclear weapons in outer space “complete nonsense” and a manifestation of “brazen double standards.”
Under these conditions, noted a representative of the DPRK Aerospace Engineering Administration, “work on space exploration, including the launch of a military reconnaissance satellite, becomes a logical and necessary strategic choice.” In this regard, he added that the directorate “will be committed to completing on schedule important missions to enhance core aerospace reconnaissance capabilities,” which contributes to “surveillance and control of military activities and aggressive attempts by the United States and hostile forces.”
On November 21, 2023, the DPRK launched its first reconnaissance satellite, Mulligyong-1. According to South Korea, North Korea has almost completed preparations for the launch of its second reconnaissance satellite.
