The ‘Chiribiquete, a landscape forever’ program secures its financing through the German Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF), marking a milestone in international cooperation for environmental conservation.
For 30 years, the Serranía del Chiribiquete National Natural Park will receive one million dollars annually for its protection, becoming the first and largest protected area in Colombia to have a constant investment program.
With an area of 4,268,095 hectares, Chiribiquete is a natural treasure which is home to a unique diversity of ecosystems and cultures. The investment provided will cover 25% of the resources necessary for its operation, in addition to financing participatory ecological restoration processes, prevention, control and surveillance activities.

The Minister of Environment, Susana Muhamad, highlighted the importance of this perpetual fund for the conservation of Chiribiquete, noting that it represents a significant advance in environmental protection. This milestone demonstrates the need for real and sustainable management of protected areas, beyond mere declarations.
The Serranía del Chiribiquete National Natural Park is a vital ally in the fight against climate change, contributing to the mitigation of its negative effects at a global level. It regulates rainfall and temperatures, and acts as a carbon sink, preventing the emission of nearly 323 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere.
In addition to its environmental importance, Chiribiquete is a cultural treasurehousing more than 70,000 cave paintings and being home to indigenous groups that live in voluntary isolation in the area.
The administration of the resources will be in charge of the National Natural Parks of Colombia, in collaboration with the NGO Frankfurt Zoological Society.
