BOLZANO. Cuno Tarfusser goes with Carlo Calenda. “Action”, north-west college. The surprise of the day with a view to European elections thus comes from the Bolzano magistrate. A career first within the South Tyrolean prosecutor’s office, among investigations that made history – the Bolzano monster, the Waldner murder, clean hands – then called as a judge at the International Criminal Court and today deputy prosecutor in the Court of Appeal in Milan. Still very much on the front line.
A few weeks ago he said on TV: “I’ll explain to you why I doubt how the Erba case was conducted.” Asking, in the meantime, for the review of another front-page trial, that of Olindo and Rosa.
«I am not honoured, but more than honored to have him on our list», says Calenda: Tarfusser was at the International Criminal Court for almost 11 years, he has experience in the good management of judicial offices, in particular in Bolzano with a record in efficiency of procedural management, a topic that is very important for us. He will be one of the leading candidates on the North West list.” So Tarfusser.
How did this candidacy come about?
Meanwhile when. A few days ago. In fact, I received the proposal, the official one, at the end of last week. I talked about it with my wife. I always do this when it comes to deciding important things. We thought about it between Saturday and Sunday and then I said yes.
So why the yes?
I am close to retirement (70 on August 11th). I think I still have a physique that allows me to work hard. And then I didn’t see myself with my hands behind my back watching the construction sites of some city. I don’t just want to follow houses under construction from morning to night.
Was it Calenda who called you?
No, his entourage first. People I already knew. Even friends.
And what about the leader of “Action” instead?
I heard it right after. Before and in the following hours the decision.
What does he expect?
Well, I don’t know, although I guess. But I say what I expect: first of all, move to have more Europe and not less. I will try to do it immediately but above all if and when I am elected.
You know international institutions well, don’t you?
Enough I would say. Probably, but I imagine, that was also what helped get my name out there.
And what Europe do you imagine should be built?
Far from sovereignism and nationalism. I can’t take any more of either one. Also because of who I am.
I mean, who is he?
I am a European citizen of Italian nationality and German native speaker. I’d say a nice mix.
So do you feel close to “Action” and its values?
I wouldn’t be here otherwise. On the hot fronts of the Union, between immigration and crises around the world, I very much agree with Calenda’s ideas.
To the point of running with him?
To the point that, even if they hadn’t proposed this to me, I would have voted for it.
What is your cultural or political background?
I have always been, so to speak, a social liberal. Reformist without too many ifs. He is very pro-European.
Has your experience traveling around the world counted?
Here I am. It happens in cases like mine, where you can see first-hand what is happening outside the borders, how important it is and will be to have a strong Europe that is as capable as possible of speaking with one voice.
She is a magistrate. Are there incompatibilities between professional role and candidacy?
Certain. This is why just yesterday I sent a letter to the CSM, the superior council of the judiciary, asking to be put on leave. Electoral expectations I mean.
Do you know that if they had proposed the north-east constituency to you, you would have been on a collision course with Paul Köllensperger, also a candidate with Action?
Oh yes? I knew it. Well.
Where he works today
In Milan. Just this morning I had a hearing.
Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda were together until recently. Then the breakup. Even in Bolzano there were mass resignations from Action after this fracture. Why did you choose to run with Calenda instead of Renzi?
Because Calenda asked me.
P.CA.
