The UK may hold a referendum on re-entry into the European Union before 2040, as the share of supporters of the United Kingdom leaving the community (Brexit) will decrease with the change of generations in society.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this opinion was expressed by sociologist John Curtis, a professor at the British University of Strathclyde.

“I would not be surprised if such a referendum were held before 2040,” the European edition of the Politico newspaper quotes him as saying. According to the results of the 2016 referendum on Britain’s exit from the EU, 75% of young people from 18 to 24 years old voted to remain in the European Union, while the share of such respondents among the age group 65-74 was only 34%, he explained He. The expert believes that generational change will lead to a change in public opinion about Brexit.

The United Kingdom left the EU on the night of 1 February 2020 after years of negotiations. On 1 January 2021, the transition period during which all European regulations applied to the UK expired.

According to a survey published in December 2022 by the Association of UK Chambers of Commerce, the majority of UK companies – 56% – are experiencing difficulties adapting to the new trading rules that came into force after Brexit. According to the study, 77% of respondents also admitted that the conclusion of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement in December 2020 did not help them increase sales.

At the same time, the Center for European Reform published its calculations. They showed that leaving the European Union cost the UK 33 billion ($40 billion) by June 2022 in lost investment and trade income.
