“On April 14, together with colleagues – emergency medical care specialist Rasa and GMP car drivers Edvard and Arvyda – they managed to rescue a middle-aged man from the clutches of death and return him to a full life,” Laima began the story.
“Like every morning, when replacing the workers of the previous shift, we discussed yesterday’s events, handed over the equipment and warm wishes: “Have a peaceful stay!”.
While we were waiting for the invitations, we unanimously decided to improve our teamwork skills from the morning – we call it a regular ritual at the Jurbarkas GMP substation, when we joined the territorial department of the Kaunas district from the first of July last year.
For some time now, my colleagues and I have been rehearsing the algorithms for providing assistance in cases of resuscitation, acute conditions, injuries, improving practical skills and details of teamwork.
We all understand that the slightest mistake in the provision of emergency medical care can be fatal, so we must always be prepared and put all the necessary special care, responsibility, sensitivity and knowledge to the maximum. In our work, everything happens at lightning speed, usually situations come suddenly, unexpectedly, you can’t delay. Therefore, quick reaction, accurate teamwork, listening often leads to success.
This morning, a serious test was also waiting for the team – the walkie-talkie beeped, the reason for the call – a 64-year-old man collapsed and was unresponsive. Rushing to the call with beacons, the dispatcher clarified on the walkie-talkie about the started resuscitation – chest compressions performed by the housemates. The second brigade was dispatched promptly.
We went to one of Jurbarkas district’s precinct centers in 10 minutes. We immediately saw that the patient’s son was performing quality chest compressions. Timely and proper first aid significantly increases the chance of saving a person’s life.
We took charge of the situation: we can confidently say that the result of the training was strongly reflected in our actions in saving life. Without words, we each understood our duties, we assisted each other. After the 3rd defibrillation, we restored heart activity, stabilized breathing, urgently and safely transported the patient to Jurbarkas Hospital, informing about the patient being brought. When we returned to the substation, we were happy with the team work, because we were able to concentrate and quickly made the right decisions.
According to my colleague Rasa, it’s so good: this wonderful neighbor will delight us with his hard work and entrepreneurship for a long time after being “born” a second time.
And we stick with the words of the Hippocratic Oath “I will protect human life and its inviolability from conception to natural death, I will respect its dignity”, – ends the story posted on the Facebook account of the GMP Kaunas regional department.
