Sonali Bendre did many great films in the nineties. Sonali, who took a break after marriage and child, made a comeback from reality shows on TV. Recently, he debuted on OTT with ZEE 5’s web series ‘The Broken News’, season 2 of which is coming soon. He spoke to us exclusively:
Earlier the career of an actress used to take a break after marriage. But today, immediately after marriage, you are doing the next film. How do you see this change?
I was working even after my marriage. I took a break after having a child. This is because I wanted to spend that time with my child. By the grace of God I had the luxury to do so. But it is true that today heroines are getting the kind of opportunities after marriage which they did not get earlier and I am very happy for it. All of us actresses who were working at that time, started working very early. No matter how good an actor you are, you can learn some things only by living life. And by the time you start living that life, there comes a period when people stop writing for you. Some roles were written only for actresses of a particular age. Now this is an opportunity that roles are being written for different ages, different types of writers can write. Now stories are getting a chance to come on screen. Those who may have written the story earlier, perhaps it would have remained in the form of a book or would have been converted into a short story. There was no chance that the story would come out in the form of a film. When multiplexes came, this story also started being made into a film. After that, with the arrival of OTT, the boundaries were broken and everyone started getting opportunities.
Exclusive: This time there is going to be a blast in ‘The Broken News 2’, Sonali Bendre, Jaideep Ahlawat and Shriya revealed secrets.
You have worked in all three mediums – cinema, TV and OTT. What difference did you feel?
It is exactly the same in front of the camera. The talent reality shows I have done are different. There I am not playing a character, but I am myself. I really enjoy meeting talented people. There are so many talented people in our country. Now that social media has come, they are getting a place where they can showcase their talent. But in our times no one even knew that there was so much talent in the country. His charm was different. It was a surprise for us that so much could happen. But wherever it is films, fiction or OTT, some things are similar in them and some are different. Like acting in front of the camera is a little different from acting on the theater stage. Movies tell a story in two-two and a half hours and show one aspect of your character. When you are doing a series on OTT, it is of a long duration. In that you get a chance to show some more aspects. The character which you have to finish in 2 hours in films, you get six hours in OTT. That means you would have got more time to understand him.

After a long time, you returned to the world of acting with the web series The Broken News with Shreya Pilgaonkar and Jaideep Ahlawat. How was the experience?
Both of them are very good actors. But I was afraid because I had seen the work of both of them. Both of them have made their place far and wide by playing different characters. I was very nervous after seeing this. Both are amazing at their work. Whatever you bring in front of them, do it so well. No matter how many people you have worked with, when you work with new people, you get a chance to learn a lot. The industry has changed a lot for me too. The way of working has changed a lot. I have learned a lot from both of them and enjoyed it a lot. Although I thought about Jaideep that he would be a person who would stay away from people, but he is not like that. Later I realized that he is a very sweet and good hearted person. I have also learned a lot from Shreya’s way of working.
