The Germans are a nation of grillers. But they are by no means the only ones who find their purpose over open fires and glowing coals. This archaic form of cooking is also celebrated elsewhere: the Americans have their BBQ, the South Africans their braai and the Argentinians their asado. And compared to the South Americans, all the other barbecue nations are basically orphans. At every opportunity, the gauchos throw loads of meat and sausages onto the grill. And her favorite companion for carnal cravings – apart from beer – is Malbec.

The drops from this red grape variety, once imported from France, are full-bodied, ripe and fruity, full of power and spice and are the first choice of wine for a decent asado between the Rio de la Plata and the Andes. With the rise of Argentine viticulture in the 1990s, Malbec came back to Europe: on the shelves of wine merchants and supermarkets. With affordable prices and accessible flavors, the increasingly numerous Argentinian bodegas have also established themselves on the market in Germany – gradually also with more sophisticated wines. A good example of this is the young Abito winery from Maipu in the Mendoza region.

The “Little Green”: The Petit Verdot from Abito brings irrepressible fruity spice and notes of pepper and vanilla into the glass,Fabian Wilking

Its Malbec, which has matured for eight months in barrique barrels, is a typical Argentine representative of this grape variety with its extensive fruitiness paired with complex spice, which can show off its full suppleness with grilled meat.

With its pure wines from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, also aged in small wooden barrels, the bodega with the big eye on the labels also has two other grape varieties originally from France in its range, which also cut a very good figure on the grill. The Petit Verdot in particular, the “Little Green”, produces a fruity spice that can hardly be contained and a typical scent of violets from the small, thick-skinned and almost black berries. In the nose it shows notes of pepper and vanilla, in the mouth a great, slightly mineral fullness that can stand up to any T-bone steak or pork neck, no matter how powerful.

In Germany the wines from Bodega Abito are available Online sender Garcias available for just under ten euros each.
